1. Infantile Eczema with Tantrums

Baby girl aged 4mths

Presenting symptoms: Patch of eczema around the back of the head for the last 10 weeks. Since birth that area had a birth mark, later it started to become scaly, then developed into a crusty skin eruption that started to peel, at other times it has an angry red appearance. The parents use sorbalene to sooth it but the eruptions still persist.

The skin tends to be very sensitive when being bathed, as red blotches occur on various parts of the body. When she is tired she throws her head from side to side, trying to rub/scratch the back of the head.

She is very sensitive to noises, generally she is a little jumpy.

She tends to sweat a lot during sleep, having a very strong ammonia odour.

Tend to easy satiety, she only eats small amounts at her feeds. She may arch and stiffen during feeding as though having tantrums. The mother says she can’t work out if she wants or doesn’t want to be fed when she does this.

At 10 – 12 weeks old she had reflux and gagging. This has settled since.

Her bowel movements are around once every three days for the last few weeks, before she was going once every five days for around 6 weeks.

She doesn’t sleep very well. Cat naps from 3 weeks of age. She screams for ages when trying to go to sleep. The mother says she looks terrified when she is screaming. She will wake up OK, then 20 minutes later will start screaming and screaming for 40minutes.

Sometimes she wants to be touched, other times she doesn’t and then she is not happy. Generally she doesn’t like being touched by strangers. She is only pacified if she is being carried around up-right in a pouch by the mother. When she is like this she has to be kept constantly being moved around up-right. The mother is exhausted as she has to carry her around all the time as this is the only way she will be pacified.

She is described as a high needs baby, very demanding. She is very alert, strong communicator, indicating what she wants forcefully. She is bored easily, must be kept on the move all the time. She dreads being alone, needs to see a parent around all the time, she must be close to someone.

Everything you do is urgent with her, it must be done quickly when she becomes tired, usually 1 hour after being awake.

If the mother is going out with her child, she won’t feed/sleep properly whilst out, or when travelling in the car she will just scream and scream and nothing will pacify her. Therefore the mother always stays home because of these difficulties.

Two weeks ago she developed a nasal discharge, later has a rattle in her chest and this still persists. Her voice has a husky sound to it.

Treatment: She was prescribed her homeopathic medicine, once daily for three days.

2weeks Later:

She became more settled, skin less itchy, not as angry looking; feeding longer on the breast; nose/chest/voice all cleared up.

Treatment: the medicine was repeated again as previously.

2 Weeks Later:

Again, she continued becoming more settled generally, she was able to go out more, her tantrums with feeding completely disappeared. Skin still red and scratching.

Treatment: again her medicine repeated.

Over the next 3 months her medicine was given every 2 – 4 weeks depending on how severe her symptoms were. Generally she had become more settled sleeping and eating better and the mother was happy with the outcome.

2. Child with Separation Anxiety Disorder

Boy, D. M., 12yrs old.

Presenting problem: The diagnosis was given by the psychiatrist as “Early-onset Separation Anxiety Disorder”. His mother feels that his anxiety problems have been there since birth. When he had to start pre-school his mother said, “It was like having to extract him from me. He had to be carried away kicking and screaming as he wouldn’t let me go.”

He has this problem only with his mother, needing to be around her all the time. He has changed schools a number of times because of the difficulties he has had forming friendships with other boys and the anxieties that occur having to leave his mother. He can’t catch the bus to and from school without his mother being there. He never sleeps over at any friend’s houses. If his mother goes out at night he will stay up and wait for her return. He has been to psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors for treatment. He has also attended courses at anxiety clinics giving him strategies to deal with the anxieties but with no success.

He also has problems with his anger becoming quite violent and abusive. He is very irritable, if things don’t go his way he explodes.

Generally he is moody and argumentative with the underlying aggressive streak coming up if he does not have his way. Apart from that, he does not have any other fears or concerns.

He is also a very bad eater, only grazes his food, he has done this since birth.

Treatment: He had been treated with periodic doses of his medicine over a10 month period. Since starting treatment he has been gradually improving. Most notably his dependence on his mother has been much less and his violent outbursts have all but disappeared. His mother has been amazed at the difference in his behaviour. He has been participating in activities with his friends and spending more time with his father, all things he would not ordinarily do.

As the treatment progressed he openly said “I am feeling better” and could notice that he was actually behaving differently. His parents think homoeopathy is great as they realised there was nothing else for him and could only see his problems becoming worse if they were not curtailed. They describe his medicine as the “happy drops”!

The above case was an edited version that was published in the Australian Traditional Medicine Society Journal.

3. Toddler with Separation Difficulties from the Mother

The mother brings her three year old because he is having sleeping difficulties as he can’t get to sleep unless the mother is constantly present. The symptoms have been gradually getting worse over the last 6 months.

He won’t let his mother out of her sight. This is the case all day long now where he will follow her wherever she goes. Unless his mother is around, he will cry and winge until she picks him up and can console him. The mother is feeling the pressure of his constant neediness. She is becoming exhausted by his constant neediness and lack of her own free time and space. She can’t do anything unless he is with her. This is getting to such a problem that she can’t even go to the bathroom without him having eye contact with her. This is now what is causing his sleeping difficulties as she has to lie with him until he finally gets to sleep.

She wants to send him to day care but is worried that he won’t let her go, so she is hoping that the homeopathic treatment can help him.

Treatment: Initially it didn’t seem to make much change with his separation anxiety, but there was some improvement with his sinus and cough symptoms that he had. This being an indication that he was starting to improve and continued treatment should add to these early changes.

He continued with more homeopathic treatment over the next month and gradually his symptoms slowly started to improve. He was happy to be able to play on his own leaving the mother to do what she needed without his clinginess. His moods and tantrums also settled. The mother stropped treatment after a short while as she felt happy with the overall outcome.

4. Severe Tantrums Controlled with Homeopathy

Girl R.K. 3yrs old.

Presenting problem: Tantrums that last for hours at a time. She has always had them but they have been worse since her baby sister arrived 8 months ago. They have also become more intense in the last 2 months as she has been weaned off her milk bottle. The mother says that the bottle used to help calm her nerves and now she no way of relaxing.

The tantrums can go for up to 2hours or more. There is no way of predicting when they will come on, but tend to occur more when she is tired. She will want something like a glass of juice and then when it is given refuse it, saying she doesn’t want it. When you take it away, she will then say she does want it. This pattern of behaviour will keep on going until she throws a tantrum as she hasn’t really got what she wanted.

When she does have her tantrum she pushes you away, kicking and screaming and this lasts for a long time. She may eventually calm herself down, but can easily be thrown into another tantrum if she starts with her demands again.

The mother tries to anticipate by placating her needs, in some cases it may stop a tantrum from coming on, but in others it doesn’t matter what you do she will go into one.

She also get angry if you disturb her in her playing which can also trigger off a tantrum.

Generally at other times she is a lovely little girl.

Treatment: Over a number of months she was given her medicine in periodic doses. During that time, her tantrums gradually became much less and when they did come on they were much more manageable. After the treatment, the parents felt she more of a normal little girl.

5. Infantile Gastric Reflux helped with Homeopathy

Boy L. N., aged 7 months.

Presenting complain: Suffering with gastric reflux. In severe discomfort, not able to sleep for long periods, night and day, loss of appetite, constantly shrieking out in pain. His case of reflux started around 6 weeks of age with the mother saying there was nothing obvious that triggered this condition off.

The only problem was the labour and delivery that required forceps and suction. Due to this there was marked bruising around the temples, left side of the face and eyes. The mother told me that the bruising lasted about 5 – 6 weeks and faded away. She had not recognised the coincidence of these two events – the bruising disappearing and the beginning of the reflux.

Treatment: He was given his homeopathic medicine and shortly after the reflux gradually cleared up.

The above case was an edited version that was published in the Australian Homeopathic Association Journal, Similia.

6. Chest Pains from Sport

Boy M. B. aged 11yrs old.

Presenting complaint: After playing sport experiences pain in the chest for the last 6 mths. He describes it as a stinging pain felt in the left side mid-chest. The pain comes on after playing sport not during or before and lasts about 10 – 15 minutes. He would press down on the painful spot, try and bend over pressing on the spot to help improve the pain. It is painful when breathing in and so he tends to take short breaths.

He describes himself as being very competitive with himself. He is very good at sport competing with himself and not anybody else.

Generally the boy is very restless, especially during his sleep. His mother describes him as though he was running in his sleep. When he is generally getting around it’s like he is going at 100mph, he can’t control himself to stop and think. “ ‘Slow down and think’, we keep saying to him” says his mother.

He says that he wants to be first in the class, “I’m going to be first in the class.” Yet he feels that he is not qualified for the class. He thinks himself as being dumb, he can’t do this or that, he feel that he can’t read and spell, he struggles with reading out in the class. With his friends he is the leader of the group, kids look up to him because he is so good at sport.

Treatment: He was treated with homeopathy and since the medicine has not had the chest pains after vigorous sport. Restlessness has also improved, sleeping all the night through without waking, and calmer during the day. He has been well since then.

7. ADHD Treated with Homeopathy

The readiness to medicate children with behavioural problems such as ADD and ADHD is seen as a quick and simple solution by schools and the medical community. However, the use of homeopathic medicine can play a central role in both stabilising this behaviour and helping the child reduce their dependency on such medication.

Here is a case to illustrate how homeopathic medicine has helped this boy from being a case that was destined for long term problems at school to the teachers and principal becoming so happy with his behaviour that he receives the Principal's Award.

Boy P.M., aged 6yrs old.

Presenting complaint: Marked behavioural disorder diagnosed as being ADD and ADHD and advised to be placed on Ritalin and Attentin by his doctor as he was too disruptive at school. His mother was against using allopathic drugs but needed to do something as his condition was getting worse and the school was pressuring her to take the drugs.

In the week before, he was suspended from attending school for three days because of hitting and hurting another child quite badly. He had already been suspended a number of times previously for one and two days for similar offences. He had lost many privileges at school. He was frequently hitting other children for no reason, was easily provoked or encouraged to misbehave. Someone may have said “Wouldn’t it be funny if you punched that girl in the face”, and he would go and do it. If someone picked up a toy that he may be playing with, he hit them. He was easily provoked to hit other children. He constantly hit and annoyed his 4 year old sister at home.

Another factor contributing to the teacher’s requests for him to be placed on Ritalin was his restlessness in class. He was always getting up from his seat, not able to keep his mind on track to complete a piece of work, so disrupting other children in the class as well. He rarely participated in small groups in class unless he began the discussion. His work performance improved when he was getting one to one attention.

Intellectually, he was average with his work in class, as his behaviour undermines his intelligence and ability to demonstrate what he can do. At home, his mother says that when she’s with him, he’s able to do his readers and homework when he’s given the attention to do it. His mother says that he never stopped at home, he had so much energy and was always whizzing around.

The first sign that there may have been a problem with this boy was at around 6mths of age when the mother noticed a strange look in his eyes, heralding the beginning of tantrums and difficulties in settling. There was no reason that could be identified for such changes. As he got older, he would have tantrums that resulted in him hitting his head against the wall or punching his head.

His mother was a singer and the boy loved music. She said that if he picked up the guitar, keyboard or drums, he played them with ease. She said that he escaped through his music. She described his behaviour as extroverted, becoming more playful around company.

On the other hand, he was not very trusting of people and did not believe you when told something. He was also quite fearful of bugs, spiders and big dogs. If he was told he can’t have something he dropped on the floor crying. He liked to control everything, if he couldn’t, he would destroy it. He was very strong minded and this would also cause aggressive behaviour if he couldn’t have his own way.

His appetite was very small. His diet was therefore limited as he wouldn’t eat much and what he did eat was in small amounts. He had a reasonable thirst.

He was prone to chronic nasal obstruction. If the weather was hot he may develop a bleeding nose.

His mother was always very busy with the family business and part time jobs. She was constantly on the go and never relaxed. His parents separated at 2 years of age and his mother was now in a stable relationship with another man. She had a history of sexual abuse and was a habitual dope smoker. She was prone to manic mood swings. The boy’s father would tease and bait her just to aggravate her. She was now being treated successfully with homeopathic medicine to help her get off the drugs and calm her moods.

Treatment:

He had been treated over a period of 10 months using homeopathy. The last couple of months no medicine was given as he was doing so well. The mother eventually stopped seeing me as a result of his improvement. A follow up phone call three months later was made to review how he was going. His mother said that she was still happy with his improvements.

The teachers and his father noticed a remarkable difference in his behaviour on his first day back at school after taking the medicine. His concentration had improved and things didn’t bother him as much. His anger had settled. Before he would play up in class and now he was starting to talk to the teachers about what troubled him. He was also starting to be more obedient in class, when told to sit down he did. Generally his obstinacy was less.

With his sister, he was saying what he wanted rather than getting angry with her. He was still hyperactive. A couple of weeks after the first dose his symptoms had started to get worse again, so this necessitated the repeat of medication. This seemed to be the pattern in the early months of treatment. There was a gradual lessoning of symptoms over all, but still the tendency for flair ups in his aggressive behaviour.

He still disrupted the class and was not able to sit still, though the teacher had noted that he was calmer than before.

Since then, he started to become more settled in class, with the teachers praising his good behaviour. There have been no more suspensions and there is more consistency with doing things appropriately. His anger was still occurring but only verbally instead of physically and later diminishing altogether. He self corrects when he does something he knows that he shouldn’t have. He is much happier in himself generally.

The teachers and principle were constantly putting pressure on the mother to put him on Ritalin so that he would be more manageable in class. As the year progressed the pressure to medicate became less as his behaviour started to be just like the other children. By the end of the school year he was regarded as a model student by the teachers and principal. He received three principal awards during the term and a gold letter from the principal for his achievements which is rarely given out.

The above case was an edited version that was published in the Australian Traditional Medicine Society Journal.

8. Delayed Development in a Child with Eczema

Girl aged 10yrs old

Her milestones were always later than normal. She was diagnosed as having Global Developmental Delay – in relation to intellectual and physical coordination.

Primarily learning problems at school are still a concern for the parents. The question they wanted to know the answer for was: “Is this the most she able to achieve or can she do better?” Learning difficulties with reading and her maths are her main areas of weakness. She tries to read but struggles with the task then says “I’m not going to do it”. She finds it hard to remember words. Her short term memory is very poor. She reads one page then forgets what she has just read. She tries to read and then has a mental blankness. Concentration is very difficult.

She also has coordination problems. For example she finds it difficult trying to wipe her bottom after going to the toilet. She walked at 18mths. Her foot was turned in. Her left hand has contraction of the tendons in the last two fingers. She tended to fall a lot in her childhood.

Nappy rash at 9mths. Eczema from birth until around 8yrs old. This still tends to become worse when she is run down. Now she has a rash on the inside of her elbow, it is dry, flaking, pimply.

Generally she is restless, she can’t sit still always playing with her hair twirling it in her finger, putting things in her mouth, chewing things. She is never naughty in any extreme way. She is placid, even-tempered, easy to live with. Moods are OK. She “baby talks” a lot. Prattles talking to her dolls, as though in a fantasy world.

Fears water, bathing, going under the water or having her head washed. Hates water going into her ear. She is sensitive to noises.

She also had bladder incontinence until around 8yrs old. She still tends to wet her bed on occasions.

Treatment

Over an 18 month period of homeopathic treatment there were a number of changes that observed in her general state:

She has been more willing to read books and is better at remembering the words after. She was now trying to understand and say the sounds of words after reading. A definite change in her approach to this task was noticeable by the mother. She was still needing to be hounded by her parents but there was less of her absent mindedness. Her writing had improved, it was more tidier, more formed.

Restlessness was better. She was more expressive in her opinions. More grown up, concentration better, there was less hassle to get her to do things. Bed wetting had improved.

In general she has become more fluent, more able to tell you what she wanted. Her reading and maths had started to improved. She now picks up books on her own and is wanting to read them. Her concentration and ability to apply herself had strengthened. Her coordination was getting better, she is even able to catch balls easier and was now wanting to play net ball as she felt more confident in her abilities. She was now socialising better, and was more motivated.

The above case was an edited version that was published in the Australian Homeopathic Association Journal, Similia.

9.Infant Suffering with Severe Bronchiolitis

Baby girl aged 10mths.

At seven months old she developed severe bronchiolitis. It started after she developed a cold when cutting her teeth with coughing, wheezing, and difficult breathing. The symptoms continued for over three weeks, with the doctors then diagnosing her with chronic viral bronchiolitis.

She becomes worse at night when it is colder and her breathing becomes much more difficult. She has a barking, hacking cough. She just keeps coughing and coughing that eventually turns into a wheeze and wakes her up from sleep. She wakes up breathless with the coughing fits, sucking in her ribs working very hard to try and breath. The wheezing is marked. She is also hot and sweaty at these times. She becomes disorientated confused and panicky with the coughing.

The pattern of these coughing episodes has been that the coughs gradually increase nightly for around a week, peak for 2-3 days, then gradually improves for another week. For 2 –3 days she will be OK then the cycle will repeat again.

She feels better in the morning, but later in the day the wheezing gets worse, coughs more and is less active. Her chest sounds moist. The coughing has become more frequent and intense lately.

During her sleep she tends to sweat but is dry during the day. She becomes sweatier after coughing and waking. She is very restless during her sleep, kicking and thrashing around in the bed.

Treatment:

She was given her homeopathic medicine over a short period of time and immediately she started to feel better. Her fever that was lingering stopped, her cough gradually started to improve as well as her appetite and sleep all coming back to normal.

After a couple of weeks all her symptoms fully resolved and has been well since.

10. Low Self Esteem, Anxieties, Wheat/ Dairy Allergies, Sleeping Difficulties

Young girl, aged 11yrs

The presenting complaint starts with sleeping difficulties for the last 6mths. There is always a struggle to get her to go to bed. When she wakes in the morning it is hard for her to get up and ready for school. Motivation to do things has always been a problem, and this is seen when she has to get going in the mornings and out of the house.

Her digestion is not good. She has allergies to wheat and dairy and gets stomach cramps when she has these foods.

She gets recurring headaches and sinus congestion.

Her mother describes her as having low self-esteem, where she believes she is not smart needing constant reassurance and positive reinforcement. She can over react to comments by her mother or siblings feeling as though she is being criticised. She has an hysterical temperament whereby she can be happy one moment then become upset the next for no apparent reason.

She has difficulties with her learning, needing extra tuition for some subjects. She needs one to one teaching. She finds it difficult to remember what she has learnt requiring constant repetition.

She feels anxious about taking on the responsibilities of getting older, wanting to stay young like her younger brother.

Treatment:

She was given homeopathic treatment for just over six months. Her sleeping improved waking in better moods and motivated to get ready for school without having to be prompted as before. Her wheat and dairy allergies, sinus and headaches all cleared up. She could now eat those foods without reacting as before.

She started to grow up, emotionally feeling happier, her confidence improved and her school work was less of a struggle to do. Her moods stabilised and the anxieties had less of a hold on her. Her mother was very happy with her progress

11. Frequent Colds and Asthma

5yr old girl

She gets frequent colds that lead into becoming severe asthma attacks. The last attack was 3 weeks earlier that became asthmatic. She needed a spectrum of drugs for both the asthma and her cold including antibiotics. The mother wants her immunity to be better to deal with the acute episodes and lesson the tendency for such events.

She has now developed another cold with severe episodes of a barking cough. The mother is wanting to try homeopathy to see if it can be used instead of having to resort to taking more antibiotics and puffers etc.

Her colds lead into developing these barking like coughs. They can be so intense that she might vomit. The coughing makes sleeping very difficult for her as well as her mother who has to frequently come in and attend to her needs.

She has a history of eczema, and allergies to eggs and nuts. Her eczema is now OK, and the asthma has become a problem.

Treatment:

She was given homeopathic medicine to address the acute cough she presented with. There was an immediate improvement. The asthma symptoms didn’t eventuate and she didn’t need any drugs. She was followed up over a six week period with periodic homeopathic remedies. From then on she has not had any more coughs/colds or asthma.
